Pricing in proportion
The Royal Mail has changed the way it prices its mail services so that the price paid is related to the size of the item you are posting, rather than just its weight. This is because size is a key factor in the cost of handling and delivering mail. This new system sets a price for sending mail based on the size of the item as well as its weight.
There are now three sizes for ordinary mail: Letters, Large Letters and Packets.
Generally you can tell which category your mail is in just by looking at the envelope but you will need to be aware of its thickness.
'Letters' covers most small and medium sized envelopes e.g. DL, C5, C6, in fact anything up to the size of half a sheet of standard A4 paper providing the weight is below 100g.
'Large Letters' covers most larger envelopes e.g. anything up to the size of a sheet of standard A4 paper or weighing more than 100g.
'Packets' will include anything else including padded envelopes.
